He was born in the Greek City of Miletus (Turkey) in 624 BCE. And he was the first philosopher in Asian Greece. Thales is the "Father of Philosophy". In mythology, he says that earthquakes occurred because the God of the sea and earthquakes was angry. And because of this concept, Thales is considered the formals of the Seven Wise Man. The third century AD historian Diogenes Laertius reported that the parents of Thales were Examyas and Cleobulina of the noble Milesian family of Thelidae. Some reports, he was married and he had a son. But they also says that possibly he adopted his nephew. While other reporters says that he never married. Some says that he no longer write anything; others that he wrote at least two works, the "On the Solistice" and the "On the Equinox". Some suggest that Thales was involved in business and politics. His involvement in Local politics is also rather anecdotal in nature. But Thales impressed the both sides of ongoing conflict between the Lydians, Medes, and Persians over the fate of the region of lonia. He predicted an eclipse which brought fighting to a standstill. In reports, he was also involved in the negotiations which followed the hostilities and manage to obtain favourable terms for Miletus. According to report, Thales died because of dehydration while watching a gymnastics contest in 546 BCE. Thales is the first person about whom we know to propose explanations of natural phenomena which were materialistic rather than mythological or theological. The theories of Thales were new, bold, exciting, and possible of explanation. He did not speak in riddles as did Heraclitus, and had no need to invent an undefined non-substance, as Anaximander did. Because he gave no role to mythical beings, Thales's theories could be refuted. Arguments could be put forward in attempts to discredit them. Thales's hypotheses were rational and scientific. Aristotle acknowledged Thales as the first philosopher, and criticized his hypotheses in a scientific manner.
“Thales says Water is the Primary Principle”. For Aristotle, wisdom knowledge of certain principles and causes. Aristotle start his investigation of the wisdom of the philosophers who preceded him, with Thales, the first philosopher, and described Thales as the founder of the natural philosophy. Aristotle recorded it. 'Thales says that it is water'. It is the nature, the originating principle. For Thales, the nature was a single material substance, water. Despite Aristotle and Plato’s advanced terminology had created. Aristotle recorded the doctrines of Thales in terms which were available to Thales in the sixth century BCE. Aristotle made a statement and he present it with confidence. It was only when attempted to have or provide reasons for the opinions that Thales held, and for the theories that Thales proposed. Thales also says that: The world derives from water, and the world rests on water.
Based on my own understanding, Thales believed that the world derives from water may be because he observed that all life depends on water. Like for example in a plant. First, when it’s just a seed, pour it with water and it will grow and it will become a plant. But, try to remove the water and it will die. Same as with animals and people. Animals and people also need water, when they are thirsty. Without water, they will not survived. That is why Thales believed and says that “Water is the Primary Principle” and “World derives from the Water”. Another is that may be Thales observed that water, alone among the nature elements, can take from solid, a liquid or a gas. Because water is already a “liquid”, when you freeze the water it will become an ice. And because it’s already an ice, it will be “solid”. And last, the moisture of heat because of the water it will evaporate and become a gas. These are just based on my understanding of possible reasons why did Thales says those things.
Thales also says that “world rests on water”. He also says that water is the cause of earthquakes. Because world is resting on the water, and when the water moves the world floats on the water that makes the world shake. Which is “shaking” of the world makes movement that causes an earthquake.
